Defiance Decorative

Photo Tile

Attention Defiance-necians, past and present! (Or is that “Defiance-tonians?”).

I've pulled together some rich photos and historic quotation and placed them onto a 6”x8” ceramic display tile to create a special memento of our great hometown.

The images feature the Defiance Public Library, a place so many of us frequented during our student days. Yet this place for research and tough assignments somehow got lost on my radar of things beautiful about Defiance.

And, did you know, that our library was constructed from a grant by the famous steel magnate and philanthropist, Andrew Carnegie?

Carnegie contributed $24,000 in 1904 for its construction – and in today’s equivalent dollars, that grant surpasses a half million dollars!

Experiencing the formerly unseen …

For me, it took a return trip to Defiance some five decades after my school-days to discover something remarkable in the obvious -- the lamp holders at the library’s front entrance reveal iron, gloved hands holding staffs of light. They are truly cool! I’d never noticed previously, and many friends tell me the first time they noticed these gloved hands came when they viewed these images.

Photographed in late summer, the artistic tile features the incredible red variegated sandstone edifice as it stands magnificently in its century-old beauty on the fort grounds. This decorative tile celebrates this key historic, educational and cultural influence on the residents of Defiance and the surrounding area.

The tile also depicts the granite marker that commemorates Fort Defiance as an important surveying landmark. During the settlement period for the area once known as the Northwest Territory in the late 1700s, "all land north to Canada is surveyed on baseline running from this point," at the confluence of the Maumee and Auglaize rivers. This geographical cornerstone is still in use today! And if you’re feeling geeky, punch "41° 17.249′ N, 84° 21.433′ W" into your handy GPS device or Google Earth to reach the monument!

Founded by “Mad” Anthony …

A quote attributed to the founder of Fort Defiance, Brigadier General “Mad” Anthony Wayne, speaks to the character of frontier folk and Revolutionary soldiers that settled the area. He reportedly said, “I defy the English, the Indians and all the devils of hell to take it.” Have you ever felt you embody some of this spirit being from Defiance? J

And add this to your Defiance trivia expertise -- it probably was not General Wayne’s military prowess that earned him the nickname “Mad” … but, instead, it reportedly came from the side affects of a metal plate placed into his head after being struck by British artillery in the Revolutionary War. It is chronicled that General Wayne suffered epileptic-like seizures that caused him to foam at the mouth, like a “mad dog.” If he lived today, that’s probably what they’d call him – “Mad Dog” Wayne!

About the tile …

These art-quality ceramic tiles feature a dye sublimation process to create a high resolution photographic image that is then “fired” onto the surface, creating its rich appearance. It is coated with a satin finish.

Upon cooling, a cork protective backing with a hanger attachment is applied so the tile may be readily displayed on your wall or tabletop … or maybe you’ll choose a small easel to display this attractive conversation piece.

Ordering is easy …

You can order by mail with a money order or personal check (tiles will be shipped once funds have transferred) or use PayPal for faster service.

This commemorative tile makes a great keepsake and conversation point … and a special gift for parents, siblings, children or friends -- anyone with ties to Defiance!
